The City of Jefferson is currently accepting applications for a Veterinarian for our Animal Shelter. This position oversees all medical operations of the shelter and provides medical attention to all animals in the shelter. Our shelter hosts an average of 2100 animals per year and welcomes over 18,000 visitors per year. We have a strong organization and community support, including the local veterinarian community. We participate and practice progressive programs to include Puppies for Parole, Fast Tracking and Trap Neuter Return.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
Provides and ensures extraordinary medical care and treatment to all shelter guests including those in temporary foster care. Responsible medical and surgical care includes sterilization of a variety of animals; dental procedures; amputations; mass removals; eye surgeries and other medical procedures as needed in a high volume setting to help identify and treat health problems to help increased adoptions and decreased adoption returns.
Collaborates daily with the shelter manager regarding the composition and quantity of all animals brought to the shelter.
Assists in other areas of the shelter when staffing levels deem it necessary. Orders all veterinary related medical and non-medical supplies, maintains inventory and provides approved invoices to the shelter manager.
Attends and represents the shelter on local boards and the animal shelter advisory committee. Maintains all established shelter medical standards, such as drug log/security, cleaning protocols, surgical procedures, medical protocols, etc.
Ensures the shelter is in compliance with all state and federal laws regarding the practice of shelter veterinary medicine on site.
Maintains accurate and complete medical records, including records in the shelter database such as treatments, examinations, test results, surgeries and outcomes and records required by local and state laws. Provides monthly, quarterly and annual reports to the manager as requested.
Arranges for relief veterinarian to fill in during vacations to ensure suitable medical coverage for the shelter.
Supervises two veterinary assistants; conducts performance evaluations, sets goals and objectives, monitors progress, provides feedback, identifies training opportunities and plans for future needs for the medical services division.
Instructs staff in the care of animals and discusses health records during adoptions; aids the shelter manager in the preparation of the annual budget.
Communicates with the public regarding animal health and shelter procedures.
Knowledge of veterinary ethics, City regulations and ordinances, and standard operating procedures of an Animal Shelter.

Physical: Ability to restrain, lift and carry animals weighing up to 100 pounds, and bend, stoop, sit, stand, or walk for extended periods of time. Ability to use tools and equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity and distinguish between shades of color.
Mental: Ability to effectively and efficiently perform various computer applications, interact with the public, work with seriously ill or injured animals, and euthanize animals when necessary.
Requires a Missouri D.V.M License, D.E.A. License, and Animal Care Facility License, and three years Veterinary experience.
