Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory: Diagnostic and Client Services Veterinarian, Academic Specialist

The Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (VDL) in the College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) at Michigan State University (MSU) invites applications for a Diagnostic and Client Services Veterinarian in the University's Academic Specialist Continuing Appointment System (https://www.hr.msu.edu/policies-procedures/faculty-academic-staff/academic-specialist-handbook/index.html). This position is designed to provide diagnostic consultation for VDL clients; facilitate communication between veterinarians and VDL laboratorians; and enhance client education and outreach. As a core member of the VDL Management Team, the incumbent will supervise the receiving and client support services teams and will report to the VDL Director. Applicants for the position must have a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or equivalent degree. Ideal candidates will have significant experience in a clinical setting; experience working in a diagnostic laboratory is desirable but not required. The incumbent is expected to have a heavy emphasis on diagnostic efficiency and customer service, and a keen interest in supporting the outreach and education missions of the CVM. A strong commitment to providing outstanding diagnostic service for all VDL clients including colleagues within the MSU Veterinary Medical Center, private veterinary practitioners, animal industry, and state and federal partners who submit diagnostic samples through the VDL is required. Experience supervising diverse teams is desirable. Excellent written and verbal interpersonal communication skills are required.

The incumbent will serve as a liaison between VDL diagnostic sections (anatomic and clinical pathology, endocrinology, toxicology, nutrition, bacteriology, virology, and parasitology) and Registration Order Entry (ROE) and Client Service Center (CSC) to facilitate communication and increase efficiencies across different sections of the laboratory; to evaluate adequacy and quality of submitted samples; to answer client and staff questions in regard to sample type and desired tests; and to represent the VDL in outreach and client education. In addition, the incumbent will supervise the ROE team and provide real-time feedback regarding sample quality as well as training for new team members; supervise the CSC team and triage diagnostic questions; provide guidance to clients and pet owners; work closely with referring veterinarians, producers, government agencies, and other laboratories; lead trainings with veterinarians and producers to review appropriate sample types, submission guidelines, and shipping requirements; perform outreach with clinicians, veterinary paraprofessionals and producers to provide updates on new and current VDL diagnostic tests and to learn about emerging testing needs; work closely with the Quality Assurance Manager to ensure regulatory compliance with accreditation standards and develop new procedures and policies as needed; participate in and ensure compliance with biosafety and bio-security programs; and other duties as assigned by the VDL Director. Required Degree: Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or equivalent degree in veterinary medicine

Minimum Experience and Skill Requirements:
Clinical experience in companion, equine, or food animal practice. Excellent communication, interpersonal, supervisory, multi-tasking, and organizational skills. Problem solving ability to troubleshoot deficiencies, identify corrective actions, evaluate new processes and materials/equipment, implement plans, and develop preventive actions. Pleasant, proactive personality with the ability to handle demanding situations, quickly adapt to address changing circumstances and personalities, and work as a team. Ability to plan and make decisions often without instruction or supervision.

Desired Qualifications:
Two years of work experience in a diagnostic laboratory and/or a broad understanding of diagnostic laboratories. Internal medicine or herd health experience. MS or PhD in an applicable scientific discipline. Internship and/or residency training.
