Dear colleague,
My name is Mikie Dawson and I am a graduate of Washington State University, class of 2007. My husband, Patrick, and I own the Waynesboro Veterinary Clinic and we are looking for an exceptional new doctor to join our team. The good news for you is that veterinarians are in high demand, so you will not have any trouble finding a job. However, I encourage you to seek out the one that is right for you.
As a new veterinarian to any hospital, it will be important that you have a team of colleagues to give you the support you need to be a confident surgeon and diagnostician. My passion is internal medicine and I spend many hours performing echocardiograms and abdominal ultrasounds. I also perform a wide variety of surgeries but I have a relentless dedication to medical problem solving and a deep affinity for clinical pathology. Dr. Twigg (Virginia Tech – 2012), Dr. Welsh (University of Kansas – 2012), Dr. Adkins (Purdue University – 2014), Dr. Grimes (UPenn – 2016), and Dr. Hafer (UPenn - 2022) are all excellent surgeons and diagnosticians! They each have their own areas of interest (including exotics) and provide a unique perspective to our cases. I am grateful and inspired by how our team solves cases and works together when puzzled or in need of a fresh perspective. It is not uncommon for us to consult each other multiple times a day regarding our most critical cases. This collaborative culture directly impacts our patients’ well-being and getting them home to their families.
I am equally proud of and grateful for our support staff. They are all knowledgeable and responsible in their respective focuses. Their technical competency allows us doctors to be efficient in our work because we are confident in their abilities. Each employee contributes to the success and mission of this practice thus we have low employee turnover and a happy core team.
Continuing education is a very important part of this practice and I encourage our doctors, licensed technicians, and CSRs to seek courses/education based on their individual interests to bring back and share. This approach is what has enabled us to offer a wide spectrum of diagnostics and treatments including echo, ultrasound, endoscopy, laser therapy, cryo-surgery, digital radiography, advanced soft tissue surgery, and orthopedic surgery just to name a few. Additionally, I continuously look to add new technologies to our practice to enhance and expand our services.
As a private practice owner, medical director, veterinarian, and mother, achieving work/life balance is not always easy. However, my staff and I cannot perform at our best without it. The team enjoys a 4 day work week plus every 3rd Saturday rotation from 9am to noon. Our associates have full autonomy of their scheduling and have access to automation and dictation software that directly impacts the ability to efficiently take notes. We have recently added the ability to perform virtual appointments, as well. The team regularly schedules staff pot-lucks and holiday parties, and celebrates life milestones such as birthdays, engagements, marriages, children, and more. There’s always a good excuse to schedule a party!
The practice is located in Waynesboro, PA which boarders Hagerstown, MD and is approximately 35 minutes from Gettysburg, PA and Frederick, MD. If you prefer city excursions, Waynesboro is located only 1 hour & 15 minutes from both Washington, DC and Baltimore, MD!
We do not take after-hour emergencies because we are supported by many emergency clinics in the surrounding area. We refer cases to VCA in Gaithersburg, MD, South Paws in Northern Virginia, UPenn, and Virginia Tech based on the specialty required.
